There is a place inside of us
That we seldom reach.
We protect this place, this hidden vulnerability,
Because it reveals our truest selves.
We may—at least in the present moment— In this eternal now,
Find that we lack something we desperately need,
Something crucial in body, mind, or in spirit
(There is always at least the possibility).
And we find in these moments
That body, mind, and spirit are difficult to separate.
The lines between them are blurry and vague.
We face this new challenge—it will not recede—
The test of something deeper within us than body, mind, or spirit.
We face the new challenge—and find there our deepest fear.
We have passed the point of no return.
The thing must be faced.
The witnesses are present.
They wait to verify, to validate, to applaud,
Or to console.
We are not afraid of them,
Yet their presence makes it impossible for us to hide the truth.
Not from them—not from ourselves.
If we fall short of our own expectations,
Life will continue but we dread readjusting the estimation of ourselves.
We have believed (or at least wanted to believe)
That we rock.
But the risk must be taken.
Our family is waiting.
